Maryland’s Rigged System? Andy Ellis Says the Real Power Problem Is in Annapolis

A man with glasses and a beard, wearing a yellow shirt with 'MUSTARD' printed on it, frowns slightly in front of a bright red background. Text overlay reads: 'MARYLAND'S RIGGED SYSTEM? ANDY ELLIS SAYS THE REAL POWER PROBLEM IS IN ANNAPOLIS.'

By Michael Phillips

Let’s play a game. Imagine you live in a state where elections are decided before you vote, legislative maps are drawn by the people in power to keep themselves in power, and the biggest threat to democracy isn’t coming from MAGA country—but from the marble hallways of Annapolis.

Congratulations. You live in Maryland.

Andy Ellis, Green Party candidate for governor, isn’t shocked by that fact. He’s just tired of pretending it’s normal.

“Voters aren’t the people who matter most to politicians in Maryland,” Ellis says. “They’re accountable to donors, party bosses, and national narratives. Not us.”

Oof. He said the quiet part out loud.

🎭 Maryland: The Progressive State That Forgot to Be Democratic

Sure, Maryland loves to tout itself as the progressive promised land. But Ellis pulls back the curtain on what that really means: a state government so dominated by one party, it makes Soviet elections look competitive.

And no, he’s not talking about Republicans.

With a Democratic supermajority baked into decades of chef’s-kiss gerrymandering, Maryland’s General Assembly doesn’t even need to listen to voters. Ellis calls it what it is: a closed shop run by career insiders where meaningful opposition goes to die.

“You’ve got state senators who were appointed eight years ago, never faced a primary challenger, and still win unopposed. That’s not public service—it’s political inheritance.”

🧼 Democracy Laundering, Annapolis-Style

How does Maryland keep the illusion of democracy alive? Simple.

  • Redraw the districts until voters don’t matter.
  • Make it nearly impossible for independents and third-party candidates to get on the ballot.
  • Block any attempt at a citizen-led ballot initiative. (Because who needs the people weighing in, right?)
  • Call it “voter protection” and go back to brunch.

It’s a masterclass in democratic gaslighting. And Ellis is fed up.

“The Democrats don’t want citizens proposing laws or constitutional amendments because they don’t want to give up power. And from their perspective—why would they?”

🧨 What Ellis Would Actually Do About It

Ellis isn’t just ranting on the sidelines. He’s got a plan that would set Annapolis on fire (politically speaking… mostly).

Here’s his starter pack:

  • Citizen Ballot Initiative Amendment: Give voters the power to petition laws onto the ballot—like almost every other functioning democracy.
  • Veto Everything Until They Listen: Ellis vows to veto every bill until the Assembly puts that amendment on the ballot. Yes, he’s serious. Yes, they’d have to override him. But at least they’d have to work for it.
  • End the Monopoly: He wants more independent candidates—not just Greens—because in some places, neither party represents the people.

“Democrats won’t lose their majority overnight. But the cycle of absolute control? That’s what needs to break.”

🎯 Not About Winning—About Waking People Up

Ellis knows the math. He’s not banking on moving into Government House next year. But that’s not the point.

“If my campaign forces the two parties to be more democratic, to talk to voters again, to be accountable—I’ve already won.”

What’s his goal? Just 1% of the vote to keep the Green Party on the ballot. But he’s shooting for 100,000 votes—a record-breaking gut punch to the status quo.

🗳️ Maryland Voters: You’ve Been Ghosted

So, if you’ve ever wondered why your state senator never responds to your emails, why your primary ballot has one name on it, or why your vote feels like a formality—it’s not just you.

Maryland’s democracy is real… adjacent.

And Andy Ellis is calling bullsh*t.

“We’ve been conditioned to think this is normal. It’s not.”
