Annapolis, MD – With just days remaining before the scheduled closure of the Brandon Shores coal-fired power plant, the Maryland Freedom Caucus (MDFC) is calling on President Donald J. Trump to intervene—and fast.
In a formal letter submitted on May 28, MDFC leaders warned of “looming blackouts, skyrocketing energy costs, and a dangerous dependence on out-of-state electricity” if the plant is shuttered as planned on June 1. Their message is simple: keep Brandon Shores open, protect Maryland’s grid, and put ratepayers first.
“Keeping the Brandon Shores power plant open and returning it to full capacity will lower your BGE bill,” said Delegate Kathy Szeliga. “It’s a simple case of supply and demand. Increase supply, the cost will go down.”
For many Marylanders, the numbers are already going up—on their monthly utility bills. And energy experts warn that the full financial pain hasn’t even hit yet. That’s because the closure of Brandon Shores is just the latest in a long line of plant shutdowns driven by progressive climate policy. In fact, seven major power plants have been closed in Maryland over the past decade, all under Democrat leadership.
THE COST OF “GREEN IDEOLOGY”
The result of this radical rush to renewables? Marylanders are being hit with:
- Higher electricity rates
- Increased reliance on expensive, out-of-state energy
- $1.5 billion in unnecessary transmission projects
- A fragile grid facing blackout risks
“It’s government-engineered scarcity,” said one caucus member. “They’re closing local generation, then turning around and spending billions to import power from other states. Who do they think pays for that? You do.”
A COMMON-SENSE CALL TO ACTION
The MDFC’s letter to Trump urges immediate federal intervention to delay or halt the June 1 shutdown, citing national energy security and public welfare. The group also wants to cancel a $1.5 billion transmission boondoggle pushed by state energy planners, which they argue is only needed because Maryland’s own supply has been systematically dismantled.
Their goals:
✅ Keep Brandon Shores operational
✅ Stop out-of-control utility costs
✅ Defend energy independence
A STARK CONTRAST
As the Freedom Caucus fights to keep the lights on, Maryland Democrats continue to push policies that reduce capacity and increase costs.
“Families can’t afford this,” Szeliga said. “This isn’t about politics. It’s about your power bill, your family’s comfort, and the basic promise of reliable electricity. The left has gambled our grid on a utopian fantasy. We’re the ones trying to keep the lights on.”
With Maryland’s energy future at stake, one thing is clear: this fight is far from over.
